OPeNDAP vs. WCS Numerical models, such as hydrodynamic and climate models, produce output with a large number of variables and a large number of grid cells and time steps. Further use of the resulting data products has been challenging, especially for further use outside the institute of origin. Due to the vastness of the data, simply downloading copies of data is impossible. Web services are therefore used to access subsets of the data. The most mature candidates for working with gridded data are OPeNDAP... |

FOSS Tools for Geospatial and Agent Based Modelling to Evaluate Climate Change in an Agricultural Watershed Land-use changes are typically modeled using geographic information systems because of the spatial nature of the data. But the complexity of coupled human and natural systems and the fourth dimension involved with change over time and time-series data expose some limitations of GIS tools when used on their own. In this paper we present the application of REPAST, a free and open source geospatial Multi-agent Model (a.k.a. Agent-based Model or ABM) to the dynamic simulation of greenhouse gas... |

There's JavaScript in your backend: Front to Back JavaScript with NodeJS and Polymaps While using JavaScript for building web based mapping applications is nothing new, recently an increasing number of developers have been using JavaScript for server-side application development. This means that JavaScript is being used for more than just making front-end user interfaces, and that developers can develop full application stacks in a single language. Additionally there are a several JavaScript frameworks that currently changing the way geo-spatial applications are being... |

A better way to manage millions of map tiles The current open source tile cache implementations all use the file system for managing tiles. Each tile is a single file stored into a common directory hierarchy. It is a pragmatic approach, easy to implement and with good performance, but it is limited. Managing millions of small files is inefficient with most file systems. The time to remove tile sets, calculate cache sizes or sync caches between differens hosts quickly becomes large enough to be impractical. This talk will show... |

Beyond Markers: a new approach to interactive realtime weather maps Markers must go! At least when things concern continuous-space processes such as weather. Could anyone care less about a sensor with its exact measurement unless it is mounted exactly where the person is? Why not move beyond markers and point measurements and instead show values everywhere as surface overlays? Markers are interactive and can link to a pop-up timeline - but so are the surface overlays! This is now possible thanks to the availability of fast spatial predictors, efficient... |

Mod-geocache, a fast tiling solution for the apache web server mod-geocache is a new member in the family of tile caching servers. It aims to be simple to install and configure (no need for the intermediate glue such as mod-python, mod-wsgi or fastcgi), to be (very) fast (written in c and running as a native module under apache), and to be capable (services WMTS, googlemaps, virtualearth, KML, TMS, WMS). When acting as a WMS server, it will also respond to untiled requests, by merging its cached tiles vertically (multiple layers) and/or horizontally.... |

At first blush, Codeplex.com appears to be a self-contained oxymoron of a web site because it is developed and maintained by Microsoft to support the open source software community - especially projects based on Microsoft's .NET platform. Indeed, such a web site should not exist, and definitely should not succeed (though it is...) MapQuery and SVG charts: a powerful interface for aggregated data Spatial data traditionally has been displayed using maps and tables. Maps, though good in showing the spatial extent, are not always optimal in showing (aggregated) geo-statistical data. The human mind can easily be tricked into believing that a bigger country has a bigger share of the pie. Tables show the individual records, but still lack the overview of aggregated data, also tables are notoriously hard to read. To view the information in an aggregated form one has to build complex... |
