HTML5 for Rich Geospatial applications on the web

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Javier de la Torre, Vizzuality

HTML5 is rapidly caching and this is great news for sophisticated geospatial applications on the web. With features like Workers or Canvas the number of things that can be done on the browser is just growing exponentially. WebGL is also likely gonna be a game changer. In the session we would like to demonstrate some of this new capabilities with a FOSS web application develop to do geospatial analysis for endangered species. The tool is used to create the Red List of endangered species worldwide: http://rlat.kew.org/

Speaker Bio:

Javier is the lead developer and co-founder of Vizzuality. Over the past 8 years has been working on the field of biodiversity Informatics and geospatial technologies for biodiversity and conservation. Right now he works on CartoDB geospatial databases on the cloud to enable great visualizations.

Tips for the PostGIS Power User

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Paul Ramsey, OpenGeo

PostGIS, is an OGC standard spatial database system, and the most common spatial database in the world of open source geospatial. Most users of PostGIS know how to get data in and out, and to form common queries, but there is much more the database can do.

The PostGIS spatial database is a full GIS system, with a SQL interface. We will cover GIS operations like overlays and unions, database topics like partitioning and performance, spatial indexes, and core spatial database concepts like Dimensionally Extended 9 Intersection Model (DE-9IM). We will review the functionality of some obscure non-standard functions in PostGIS, and discuss new features like the "geography" type and how to use them in conjunction with existing standard functionality.

Speaker Bio:

Paul Ramsey is an geospatial consultant with OpenGeo, an expert in open source software, and a founder of the PostGIS open source spatial database project. Paul is a director of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation, and has been a long time advocate for making intelligent use of open source in systems design. Paul speaks and teaches frequently at conferences on the use and abuse of open source geospatial software

TinyOWS, what's new for the high performance WFS-T server?

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Olivier Courtin, Oslandia

This session is about TinyOWS, the high performance WFS-T server.

TinyOWS operates on top of a spatial database, and provides an OGC WFS-T interface.

This application born in 2007, is now a real alternative to other WFS implementations, especially when seeking simplicity, performance and standard compliance, cf http://www.tinyows.org.

This presentation will focus on the following points:

  • How do we improved _ again _ TinyOWS performance ? An insight on architecture, configuration tips, comparative benchmarks with others WFS OSS tools and more…
  • What new juicy features are available in latest TinyOWS release ? … surprise, surprise …
  • OGC and INSPIRE compliance, what is done and what is left: OGC CITE Tests, WFS 2.0 and INSPIRE Download service
  • TinyOWS and its related ecosystem: QGIS and/or OpenLayers as WFS-T client, MapServer as a WMS companion…
  • Future, roadmap and conclusion
Speaker Bio:

Olivier is the main developper and maintainer of TinyOWS since 2007.
He's also involved in PostGIS project, as both projects are somewhere tied.

Olivier is with Vincent Picavet owner of Oslandia,
a small company focused on Open Source GIS.
