3D Globes advanced visualization

Recently IGO Software has developed Glob3 project, Euclid library and also Sextante library migration to a 3D environment with the Extremadura University. All these tasks ended in a Framework release destinated to the 3D development application known as Glob3, that will continue in development during 2011. Its roadmap can be found in the project website http://www.glob3.org.

According to this, several advanced georeferenced data visualization has been developed. We think that it could mean a special interest for the comunity, beacuse it hasn't been developed before using free software, specifically:

  • Point clouds visualization through streaming.
  • 3D models visualization.
  • Multi-dimentional files visualization en netCDF format (network Common Data Form).
  • Vector GIS files visualization.
  • Gigaimages and 360º pictures.

pyKML: a Pretty Pristine Package Promoting a Pythonic Path for Programmatically Producing, Playing with, Publishing, and Parsing Particularly Prickly KML

We all know what KML is, and by now most geospatial software packages offer some type of KML support. But, you've got to admit it, the majority of 65 million KML/KMZ files available on the internet are pretty... well... boring. Very few of them take advantage of the interesting advanced tags offered by the OGC KML spec (like <roll> and <drawOrder> !) or the Google Extension spec (like <gx:ViewerOptions> and <gx:angles> !). The pyKML package gives you access to the whole kitchen sink of elements in the KML spec, and provides functionality for constructing, parsing, validating, and removing that embarrasing KML lint. Make pyKML your library of choice for your next virtual basejumping adventure!

gvSIG Mini support for OSM massive POI data

gvSIG Mini is a free tiled map viewer for Android with support for OSM, WMS, WMS-C, TMS, other non-standard tile servers, routing, localization, etc. and now offline support for searching and visualize POIs and addresses.

A process to download POI data of any city from the OSM planet database has been developed. POIs and streets are downloaded, processed, indexed and stored into an object oriented database.

gvSIG Mini is able to manage several POI city database without connectivity, allowing any user to browse or perform full-text POIs and addresses search, find nearby places, share, call or visit the website of a POI, manage favourite places, display POIs by category, applying level of detail and grouping nearby points to efficiently and clearly represent all the data.

Several problems have been solved during the development and will be presented during the talk: Implementation of a clustering algorithm to deal with visualization of many thousands of points, multiresolution representation of points, spatial and full-text indexing, contextual simbology; giving as a result an efficient offline solution for manage vectorial data on mobile devices.

Mobile GIS through Geomajas

With the increasing popularity of Smartphones and tablets we have entered a brave new world where mobile devices reign supreme. It is only logical the Open Source GIS community should follow this trend. The question is how? The current generation of web GIS products have had to overcome a wide variety of browsers to support, and so too must the next generation support an equally wide variety of mobile platforms.

By leveraging the Google Web Toolkit (GWT), the Geomajas project has made the first steps into the mobile world with great success. This presentation will start with the current situation of the Geomajas project with regards to mobile and discuss the technical challenges that await us. These challenges will cover the limited bandwidth, how to achive high performance while keeping the power usage low, etc.

We will end this presentation with an overview of the roadmap towards the ultimate mobile GIS platform, and discuss priorities and choices in order to get there.

Pieter De Graef is the current Chair for the Geomajas project, and works as a community manager and lead developer for Geosparc. In a previous life he worked for the Belgian company DFC as a GIS integrator.

OpenStreetMap for Network Analyses in ArcGIS

The usage of free geodata like OpenStreetMap (OSM) is becoming more and more popular because there are many fields of application. For the first time, there is an application which converts OSM data to ArcGIS transportation networks. These transportation networks can be used in ArcGIS to perform network analyses with the extension Network Analyst. This application was developed by Eva Peters for her bachelor thesis in Cartography and Geomatics in collaboration with ESRI Deutschland GmbH.

This program “OSM2NetworkDataset” was designed to generate transportation networks for any mode of transportation and any region. The generated networks use OSM attributes such as restrictions, one-way roads, turn restrictions, point barriers, and maximum speed. The path can be chosen with user defined average speed settings based on the shortest distance or shortest time. The user can generate network datasets based on individual settings, which is a big advantage and opens many fields of application.

First, the application builds a geodatabase which contains a network dataset. Then a map document is created. This map document is ready to perform network analyses.

The application was written in Java and uses the Java library ArcObjects. It can be used on ArcGIS 9.3.1 and ArcGIS 10.

By using the Network Analyst of ArcGIS, a route can be calculated on the generated transportation network. Furthermore, service areas and location studies can be performed.

The created networks are comparable with other network analysis services. The data is adequate for applications like car, bicycle, and pedestrian routing. This is due to the fact that the data is collected in the perspective of motorcar drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
