Use of Google Fusion Tables for a public floodplain interface

In 2010, Ventura County applied for inclusion in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Community Rating System. This program allows a reduction of flood insurance premiums in return for a comprehensive ongoing effort to reduce flood risk. A part of that comprehensive program includes conveying current flood risk to the public. In order to provide a simple yet accurate interface for the public to view the latest floodplain boundaries, flood zones and flood depths in the county, a Google Maps interface was created using Fusion Tables. The details of this interface, along with the automated scripts and procedures developed to maintain the data from FEMA download, storage on PostGIS, and KML conversions for Fusion Tables is the subject of this paper. Topics will include tips, tricks, lessons learned and example code for the interface and upload procedures. Future directions will also be discussed including inter-agency cooperation and collaboration.

Speaker Bio: 

A registered professional engineer, Mr. Rindahl has more than 30 years of experience in a wide variety of water resource disciplines.  Much of his experience is in the area of water supply planning and flood warning systems.  He also has extensive experience in optimization of water resource systems, design and integration of computer models, geographical information systems and their use in water resource applications and floodplain analysis.

glob3 mobile: a framework for virtual globe development in iOD and Android mobile devices

Over last years, handheld devices have made important advances. Increasing processor speed, emerging platforms with dual processors, improved memory resources, power graphics and more than acceptable programming capabilities have open these platforms to the development of general purpose applications. Of increasing interest on mobile application are virtual globes, GIS applications, maps browsers etc. We present a framework for virtual globe development for familiar iOS and Android mobile devices. Some salient features of our framework are the use of OGC standards, design of server-side information and pre-processed data to enrich the applicability on mobile devices.
Since available CPU and memory resources in mobile devices are generally limited, we have designed our algorithms and data management aiming at simplicity, efficiency and scalability. We implement a LOD strategy for both, textures and elevation data. Special focus has been given to user interaction with the globe by using multi-touch screens and realistic 3D geometric criteria. We include a complete set of finger gestures to afford smooth and pleasant interaction with the globe.

Our implementation guarantees a fine-quality and real time navigation over the virtual globe. The software architecture is an open framework, thereby facilitating the implementation on familiar iOS and Android mobile devices, including some of the most known smart phones and tabs. We show some tests and demos over these devices to provide evidence of the quality of the developed virtual globe.

Future projected work includes gateways to open API’s on the web as climate, geonames, Twitter, Facebook, Tuenti, etc.

GeoNetwork opensource - The geospatial metadata catalogue

The presentation will provide an insight of the new functionality available in the latest release of the software. Publishing and managing spatial metadata using GeoNetwork opensource is becoming main stream in many Spatial Data Infrastructures. The project developers have made big progress on INSPIRE support, performance, multilingual metadata and catalogue services compliance. Examples of implementations of the software will be given, highlighting several national European SDI portals developed in the context of the INSPIRE directive.

Speaker Bio: 

Jeroen Ticheler founded GeoCat bv in 2007. After achieving his MSc in Tropical Forestry (Agricultural University Wageningen, NL), Ticheler worked for the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in Rome for almost ten years. He held various positions in GIS/remote sensing and established the respected GeoNetwork opensource Project.

Ticheler truly believes in sharing knowledge: I want to make technologies for publishing geospatial data on the internet available to every organization, no matter how big or small. It is wonderful to see how easy it can be to publish geospatial data on the internet and how knowledge sharing can accelerate innovation.

MapMint: The Next Generation SDI Manager

MapMint is a comprehensive task manager for implementing and managing a spatial data infrastructure (SDI). It will be presented to the community to showcase its complete and robust platform to organize, edit, process and publish spatial data to the Internet.

MapMint is based on extensive use of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specifications, and allows an orchestration of Web Feature Services (WFS), Web Mapping Services (WMS) Web Map Tiling Services (WMTS) and Web Processing Services (WPS) through a modular and intuitive Web application.

MapMint server is mainly based on ZOO-Kernel 1.2.0 and MapServer 6.0.0. Most of its functions are run as WPS requests, calling both general services (for configuration, data and project management, user permissions etc.) and geospatial data management services based on MapServer 6.0.0 (transactional support, .map file writing/editing, symbology and classification). Further, geoprocessing services are available through GDAL/OGR and GRASS 7.0 (for format and projection management, vector and raster operations, spatial analysis). MapMint also contains a set of document production services based on the OpenDocument server.

MapMint client is built upon jQuery, jQuery-UI and OpenLayers. It provides a complete and user-friendly back-office to the user, to control and deploy SDI services in a standardized way with data from local or remote datastores, process it, create new layers, and finally organize Web mapping projects to be published online.

MapMint architecture and features will be introduced in this presentation, and its five inter-connected modules will be described, with an emphasis on which OGC standards they are using and which OSGeo software they are running.

Jeff McKenna operates a consulting company, Gateway Geomatics, located on the East Coast of Canada, focusing on assisting organizations publish spatial information on the Internet.  Jeff is a member of the MapServer and ZOO Projects Steering Committee (PSC), and is also the documentation lead for these two projects.  Jeff is also the maintainer of the popular MapServer for Windows (MS4W) project, and is involved in the development of the OSGeo4W installer.  In 2009, Jeff was named to the OSGeo Board of Directors.

Designing a better SDI

Speaker Bio: 

Sebastian manages GeoNode--the project, the product, and the development team. GeoNode is the next generation of spatial data Infrastructure, combining GIS, cataloging, and Web 2.0 functionality in a single package. Parallel with his managerial role, he is a GeoNode committer and Project Steering Committee member.

Rolando works as OpenGeo's lead interaction, graphic, and web designer and as such is responsible for much of the interaction design and user workflows underpinning GeoNode.
